The Kinsey Institute Juried Erotic Art Show Opened on May 28th at the School of Fine Arts Gallery. The gallery is located at Indiana University Bloomington and is open to the public.

In 2002 the Seattle Erotic Art Festival was created by the Center for Sex Positive Culture and their goal is to celebrate the entire realm of erotic expression. The festival includes many types of art including visual art, performance, interactive installations and literary art. Some of the Erotic Art medias used include painting, photography and film.

In 2010 the festival had over 1,600 pieces submitted by well over 400 artists and performers. The final erotic art pieces selected for the show were selected by jurors Chris Crites, Sharon Arnold, Jen Grages, Daniel Carrillo and Dianne Elliott. Lucid Daydreams – Erotic Art show featuring the work of Jeff Wack and Ken Mierzwa

Gallery Provocateur is hosting the erotic art show Lucid Daydreams featuring the work of photographers Jeff Wack, Keigh Klein, Dave Levingston, Mariah Carle and Ken Mierzwa. Paul John Ballard is showing his fine art nude drawings and a special appearance is being made by the Chicago Naked Girls Reading on May 29th from 8pm to 12am.

The exhibit runs May 29th to August 7th, 2010. An artist reception is taking place on Saturday May 29th from 8pm to 11:30 pm.

A closing reception will take place on Saturday June 5th from 8pm to 11:30 pm.

Norman Rockwell Nude Painting

American artist Norman Rockwell was definitely not known for producing erotic artwork. In fact only one nude painting is known to have been painted by the famed painter. The painting is a nude study of an African American woman entitled “The Manapessa” and has also been called “Portrait of Miss Jackie Wells.” The painting has was created while Norman Rockwell was a student at Wayne State in 1958. Miss wells was gifted the painting after its completion.

In 1990 Jackie Wells now a sixty one year old secretary in Detroit sold the painting at auction. The piece sold for $50,000 to Mr. Tom Sullivan. The comparatively low price for a Norman Rockwell painting was attributed to the fact it featured a nude subject and was smaller than a lot of his work.

I have been unable to find a photo of “The Manapessa” however I did find this small sketch of nude can-can dancers.

Burlesque Search Trends 2004-2009

Interest in the erotic and comedic art form known as Burlesque has been steadily rising over the last six years. You may have noticed that national and local news sources have been doing reviews and features on burlesque events more and more often. More and more bars and small theaters have been booking burlesque acts as the popularity of the art form has garnered more and more attention. Performance artists like Dita Von Teese have also contributed in bringing burlesque to the main stream through print, video and television exposure.

In 2009 Hollywood picked up on the trend and started producing a musical entitled Burlesque. The movie will star Dita Von Teese, Kristen Bell, Alan Cumming, Cher and Christina Aguilera. The film is set to be released in theaters in November of 2010.

When viewing the search trends for burlesque it is easy to see the growth in the overall art form as well as the interest in the Burlesque movie. The chart below shows the search engine trending data for the term burlesque from 2004 through November of 2009.

Japanese Erotic Prints that inspired Pablo Picasso now on display

A recent showing of Japanese erotic prints that woould go on to inspire artist phenome Pablo Picasso are now on display at Barcelona’s Picasso museum. The erotic art exhibition started on 11-5-2009 and will run until 2-14-2010 . The show also features a select number of Picasso erotic art etchings. 2010 Dirty Show has an open call for Erotic Art submissions

The Dirty show is a National Erotic Art show that takes place each year in Detroit MI. The show has become one of the largest annual erotic art exhibitions in the world. If you are a painter, multi media artist, photographer, burlesque dancer or photographer you can submit your erotic art on the Dirty Show website. The submission deadline is December 15th 2009.

The Dirty Show will be happening February 12-20, 2010 in Dertroit Michigan, USA.

The Windy City Burlesque Festival

A new national burlesque festival has just been announced and is now accepting applications for performers. Following national trends Chicago has seen an amazing growth in the local burlesque scene. Burlesque performers like Pearl Pistol, Michelle Lamore, Paris Green and Red Hot Annie have been producing more and more shows for larger and larger audiences. The next logical step was for someone to create a festival to spotlight local, national and international acts.

The show will be co produced by the longest running Burlesque show in Chicago The Belmont Burlesque Revue and the incredibly prolific Vaudezilla burlesque productions. This burlesque festival aims to educate as well as entertain by offering workshops and classes where burlesque dancers can network and the general public can learn everything from making burlesque costumes including pasties to choosing a stage name to the erotic art dancing with a feather boas!

One of my absolute favorite erotic artists is painter Gustav Klimt. Gustav Klimt was part of the Vienna Secession movement and his main focus was the inherent beauty of the the female form. You may have seen his famous works such as The Kiss or Judith and the Head of Holoferne. Many of his paintings were nude studies and his drawings were incredibly vibrant and erotic. In 2005 a book was published by Prestel Publishing entitled Gustav Klimt: Erotic Sketches. The book includes 60 pages of Klimt’s unitque take on female sexuality and eroticism. The Dirty Show is having a gallery show in Los Angeles

A Detroit erotic art staple for over a decade the Dirty Show is word class erotic art show. This year they have broken out of the Detroit erotic art exhibition scene and are hosting a two night event at the City Center Motel in Downtown Los Angeles. The show is opening on Friday the 13th, @ 7pm to 11pm. They are closing the show on Saturday, Nov. 14th @ 6pm to 11pm with a gala closing event and an after party put on by Fetish Nation.
